Dallas, PA – The Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition of Luzerne County (GDAC) will welcome MacArthur Fellowship “Genius” Award winning Environmental Scientist and Chemist Wilma Subra to the Wyoming Valley for two speaking dates, on July 10th and 11th. The events will serve as the 4th in GDAC’s Educational Series.
In addition to Subra Company, a chemistry lab and environmental consulting firm in New Iberia, Louisiana, where Ms. Subra provides technical assistance to citizens concerned with their environment by combining technical research and evaluation, she has served on a number of important organization and agency boards. They include a seven-year term as Vice Chairwoman of the Environmental Protection Agency National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT); the National Advisory Committee for the U.S. Representative to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation; the EPA National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) as a member of the Cumulative Risk and Impacts Working Group of the NEJAC Council; and past Chairwoman of the NEJAC Gulf Coast Hurricanes Work Group. Subra is also an Earthworks board member and a Texas Oil & Gas Accountability Project Steering Committee member. She holds degrees in Microbiology/Chemistry from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. The Fellowship, granted by the MacArthur Foundation, focused on her helping of ordinary citizens to understand, cope with and combat environmental issues in their communities.
In 2010, Subra was profiled on CNN's Health Report; and was voted one of 2012's "fiercest women".
Subra’s presentation, entitled “Human Health Impacts Associated with Chemicals and Pathways of Exposure for the Development of Shale Gas Plays”, will be held on July 10th, 7:00 p.m., at Temple B’nai B’rith, 408 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston; and July 11th, 7:00 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wyoming Valley (behind St. Frances Cabrini Church), Intersections of Mt. Olivet & Church Roads, Wyoming, PA.
Both venues are free and open to the public.
